My External Hard Drive have not got Recognized on my Mac Computer

Home > Frequently Asked Questions > My External Hard Drive have not got Recognized on my Mac Computer

Recently I bought a new external drive because my old Macbook Pro Hard drive got failed and I wanted to regain all the data back on the new drive but when I plugged it in, my external hard drive have not got recognized on my Mac. Afterwards when I tried backing up data automatically, it didn't work and kept on crashing. So, I transferred most of my data files manually to the external HDD. But when I connected it with my Macbook Pro it kept on notifying me that, it is not recognized. What it really did, it made a humming noise and the lights started blinking off and on but it didn't show up in my system.

  1. Plug in the external hard drive and ignore the pop up message.
  2. Go to Disk Utility, which should be present in your applications tray area.
  3. Now you will see two devices, one is your main and another is your external HDD. Identify them with their names and choose the external one.
  4. Now go to the tab of partition located at top right and click on one or many partitions, and make sure the format for the external hard drive is Mac Journaled Extended.
  5. Click Apply. It will clean out the whole drive for you to make partitions, as per your needs.
  6. Supposing, if the size of your external hard drive is double the size of the internal one. Make only two partitions, one for machine and one for carbon copy cloner, for the purpose to create a bootable back up of your current setup. So, in case, if your hard drive gets failed ever, you would be able to use your Macbook Pro from the external drive.
